Methamphetamines, more often referred to as “meth,” are illegal stimulants that are highly addictive, providing users with a “rush” of euphoric feelings and a boost of energy. Often referred to as “the most dangerous drug in the world,” meth users often report becoming addicted to the drug after the first use. A white crystalline powder or crystallized rock (“crystal meth”), methamphetamines have many routes of abuse. Some users snort meth, others smoke it, while still others inject the drug intravenously. Meth quickly crosses the blood-brain barrier, causing the high the users crave, the effects lasting six to eight hours.

Meth and crystal meth are dangerous, potent drugs that act as a stimulant, producing feelings of invincibility, heightened libido, surge of energy, and increased self-confidence. After the initial high has worn off, meth users begin to feel agitated and may become violent or engage in incredibly risky behaviors. If meth use is continued, this potent toxin will systematically produce negative health consequences to virtually all organ systems. Chronic meth use causes aggression, “meth mouth,” delusions of “meth bugs,” brain damage, psychosis, and cardiac complications.

As with other addictive drugs, meth users quickly develop a tolerance to the drug, requiring greater amounts of the drug to achieve the same euphoric high. To achieve this high, many meth users abuse the drug in a binge-crash pattern, staying awake and not eating, and using meth for days on end until the user eventually crashes, exhausted and spent.

If left untreated, chronic methamphetamine abuse will lead to devastating consequences for the user, leaving virtually no aspect of his or her life unharmed. With proper support, rehab, and therapies, many individuals who have come to Delta Specialty Hospital to seek rehab for their meth addiction have come away from our care sober and happy. Our state-of-the-art addiction center has helped people just like you recover from addictions and learn to rebuild their lives. Let us help you recover from methamphetamine addiction.

Why Consider Treatment

Why consider treatment for meth addiction at Delta Specialty Hospital in Memphis, TN

Chronic meth usage can lead to serious social problems as well – meth-addicted individuals spend most of their time and energy “chasing the high,” or seeking out, using, and recovering from the effects of the drug. Loved ones, unsure of how to handle their addicted loved one, may begin to turn away from the user, especially if he or she has been lying, stealing, or violent with them. Holding down a regular job becomes an insurmountable task, as an addict already has a full-time job: using meth. Financially ruined, a meth addict will have to resort to alternative means of making money to supplement their growing habit.

At Delta, we are fully committed to providing you with the highest quality of addiction recovery. Types of Treatment

Types of meth addiction treatment offered at Delta Specialty Hospital in Memphis, TN

When you come to us for help, you’ll first undergo a series of both physical and psychological evaluations to help us get a better picture of how best to focus your care. If your medical examination reveals that you are heavily dependent upon meth, your first step with us may be medically monitored detox. We’ll also determine the health consequences of your meth addiction and begin treatment right away. If your psychological examination reveals that you are struggling with a co-occurring mental illness, we’ll incorporate this into your plan of care with us.

If we’ve learned that your body is physically dependent upon methamphetamines, you’ll first join our detoxification treatment. In detox, we’ll safely and effectively remove the drugs from your body in a medically monitored environment to ensure that you remain safe and comfortable throughout the process. We’ll also begin to treat any underlying health problems at this time. When you are medically stabilized, you’ll move into the next phase of your treatment.

Medication may be used at the beginning of your stay with us to reduce unpleasant withdrawal symptoms or manage symptoms of co-occurring disorders. Some people find that they only need medication for a short while before tapering down the dosage. Others may need longer-term medication management to address any co-occurring mental health disorders. The usage of medication will be determined by your treatment team and evaluated throughout your stay. In addition to detox and medication management, we also offer a variety of therapies to best address the psychological aspects of addiction.

Inpatient therapy is used to provide you some one-on-one time with a therapist. You’ll work through problems you’re facing in your life, how best to solve them, and ways to prevent a relapse.

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is one of the best forms of therapy for managing addiction recovery. It allows you to challenge the negative thought patterns you have and replace them with more adaptive ways of viewing the world. In turn, this should help change your behavior for the better.

Group therapy is the primary therapeutic modality we use at Delta to manage addiction. It is through group that you’ll have the opportunity to work with others struggling with similar addictions. We offer both process-based and psychoeducational groups to allow you the opportunity to process some of your emotions as well as the chance to learn more about your addiction.

Family therapy is an important part of the recovery process. The most successful recoveries are those in which there is an established network of loved ones ready to offer support. We aim to include family in your recovery from meth addiction in order to teach them more about addiction, the recovery process, and aftercare plans. We’ll also hold family sessions to allow your loved ones to share their feelings about your addiction.

In addition to these traditional therapeutic modalities, we also offer a number of experiential treatments to best help heal the whole person. These treatments may include:

  • Nutritional and wellness counseling
  • Spiritual guidance
  • Therapeutic activities
  • Recreational activities

Continuing Care

Continuing care and levels of treatment for meth addiction

When it comes time for you to move into the next steps of your recovery from meth addiction, you’ll work closely with your treatment team to determine what next steps match your needs. Some individuals are not quite ready to leave the structure of inpatient treatment and may benefit from residential treatment. Most opt to join one of our step-down options. We offer both Intensive Outpatient Therapy (IOP) and Partial Hospitalization Programs (PHP) to allow for the most continuity of care. Still, others opt to discharge into a stable home environment with referrals to outpatient therapy and community resources. Whatever your next step, Delta will stand behind you every step of the way.

The Delta Specialty Hospital staff here did an amazing job helping me understand and overcome many of the underlying causes to my meth addiction. They are always so genuinely supportive and caring.
