Suicide, the act of taking one’s own life, is a devastating reaction to stressful life events made all the more tragic as it can be prevented. It may feel as though there is no solution to the problems you’re facing, that suicide is the only way to end the pain you feel. There are steps you can take and people you can reach out to in order to reduce these feelings and begin to see a future full of hope.

If you’re experiencing suicidal thoughts, know that you’re not alone. Most of us have felt this way before and worked past it to live a happy, fulfilled life. Thinking about suicide isn’t a character flaw, nor does it imply that you are weak – it’s simply the result of more pain that you can deal with at the moment. The emotional pain may feel overwhelming and like it will never end. With time, therapy, and continued support, you will overcome these problems and the emotional pain and suicidal thoughts will pass.

Suicidal thoughts are often the result of problems that are treatable. Many people react strongly to loss, depression, anxiety, medical problems, substance addiction, financial struggles, occupational or scholastic issues, or other difficulties in life. These stressors can cause profound distress and cause us to lose our ability to solve problems. Even if you cannot see it at the moment, there are always solutions to your problems.

You may feel very alone right now, but there are a great number of people who want to support you through this time, even if it doesn’t feel this way. The staff at Delta’s treatment clinic won’t argue with you about your misery or tell you to “quit whining.” We will not judge you. We’ll simply be there, beside you as you work through your pain. We know how hard it is to tell another person that you’re having suicidal thoughts, and we’re proud that you’ve chosen us to reach out to during this time. We know you’re not weak or flawed, you’re simply overwhelmed by emotions.

Please, call the compassionate and loving staff at Delta to allow us to help you begin to heal.

Why Consider Treatment

Why consider treatment for suicidal thoughts Delta Specialty Hospital in Memphis, TN

Continuing to live a life with suicidal ideations can cause an individual to have multiple problems in life. While at the time these are only thoughts, the longer they go untreated the more likely it is that an individual may come to act on those thoughts. Types of Treatment

Types of suicidal thoughts treatment offered at Delta Specialty Hospital in Memphis, TN

At Delta, we have specially trained staff to help you process the emotions surrounding you that have led you to begin having thoughts of suicide. Before determining the best treatment for you, we will conduct a comprehensive medical, psychiatric, and behavioral assessment. These assessments will be conducted by our qualified interdisciplinary staff of physicians, nurses, social workers, and mental health counselors. Based on the results of your assessments, your treatment team will put together a plan of action that will help you to recover. We want you to get back to your previous level of functioning and we will do everything we can to make that a reality.

Medication may be used as part of your recovery process in order to help you deal withsymptoms that may be causing you to have thoughts of suicide or to manage any co-occurring disorder that you may have. Gradually, medication may be decreased or stopped entirely as you learn how to face the stress of daily life in a more healthy way.

Individual therapy is used on an as-needed basis, giving individuals more time with a therapist to work through issues that may not be covered in group sessions. Certain topics can be covered in more detail and the individual can dig deeper into subjects that they may not feel comfortable discussing in a group.

Family therapy is an important part of the treatment process, as those who have gone through a traumatic event need a good support network. We ensure that your family is provided information about your condition and learns how they can best be of help for you. We will do our best to answer their questions, address their concerns, and provide them with treatment recommendations when your stay with us draws to a close.

Group therapy is a major part of the treatment process here at Delta. This type of therapy allows you to connect with other individuals who may be going through similar issues. By working together you can gain additional support and insight into why you may be having these suicidal thoughts. Together you can help each other to heal and reclaim your lives. We have two types of groups that you will be involved in, process-based and psycho-educational. Our psycho-educational groups provide information on topics of general interest and teach new skills that can be used to deal with the unique stresses you face. Our process groups help you work through issues related to your trauma in a mutually supportive atmosphere.

We also provide several additional services which may include:

  • Nutrition and wellness counseling
  • Physical therapy
  • Recreational therapy
  • Daily therapeutic activities
  • Spiritual guidance

Continuing Care

Continuing care and levels of treatment for suicidal thoughts

When you have come to the end of your treatment, you will work with the treatment staff to develop an aftercare plan that will allow for continuity of care. If it is decided that you still need a more structured form of care you can enroll in one of our outpatient options. Our Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) meets five days a week, providing a minimum of 20 hours of services and our Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP), which meets three days a week, provides a minimum of 12 hours of services. Some individuals may be ready to return home and seek additional treatment through traditional outpatient therapy. We can help you find a therapist that is a good fit for your needs and make sure you have information about local community resources.

I have had suicidal thoughts for the past year and have had only a few attempts but never got to the point to go through with it. My family found out and helped me by taking me to Delta Specialty Hospital, where I attended their treatment program and therapy sessions. They have helped me so incredibly much and I am no longer having suicidal ideations.
