Alzheimer’s disease is a disorder of the brain that causes memory loss, especially for newer memories, as well as cognitive degeneration, and results in problematic behavioral responses. In the beginning, Alzheimer’s disease is relatively mild – in some cases, it may be mistaken for the normal forgetfulness that comes with getting older. However, over time it only gets worse and becomes more debilitating. Eventually, individuals with Alzheimer’s disease will no longer be able to care for themselves. Fortunately, research has led to better treatment options to help individuals with this disorder maintain their memory and related cognitive functioning for longer than previously possible.

Alzheimer’s disease is not considered to be a normal part of getting older. However, the most well-established risk factor for developing this type of dementia is increasing age, as the majority of individuals currently suffering from Alzheimer’s disease are over the age of 64. Although rare, younger people are diagnosed with this disease, with about 5% of cases diagnosed when individuals are in their 40’s and 50’s.

This illness advances in a progressive manner, while dementia symptoms slowly worsen. During the late stages, individuals may be no longer able to respond to their environment. At Delta, we understand the struggles you face and know how distraught you may feel. It is essential to get treatment as soon as possible so that the symptoms can be controlled and the progression of this disease can be slowed. Let us help you decide your next step.

Types of Alzheimer’s disease treatment offered at Delta Specialty Hospital in Memphis, TN

Our senior care unit is an inpatient treatment care option designed to address both psychological and medical needs unique to older adults. The main focus of treatment for this unit is medical stabilization and management. Additionally, we promote optimal cognitive, social, and behavioral functioning for each individual. All of our patients are treated in a supportive and secure environment that provides the opportunity to interact with others. The best form of treatment for those with Alzheimer’s is medication management, therapeutic methods, and engagement in activities.

Upon arriving at Delta, all patients will undergo comprehensive medical, psychiatric, and behavioral assessments in order to determine a patient’s exact needs. We work to restore physical and behavioral health to older patients, while providing dignity and respect. You will meet with physicians, nurses, counselors, and social workers who will assist you throughout the entire treatment process.

Medication may be given to patients to help with the symptoms of Alzheimer’s, as well as any additional medical or behavioral issues. Medication management will be used to help patients remember to take their medications on time and to assess their effectiveness. Sometimes medications or dosages will need to be altered.

Individual therapy may be used during your stay with us so that you have the opportunity to focus more in-depth on your struggles as they relate to your Alzheimer’s disease. Time may be spent working through depression, coping skills, and the importance of medication.

Our group therapy sessions are process and psycho-educational based, which allows you time to interact with other individuals who are struggling with similar issues. Group work instills in individuals the idea that they are not alone, that others are going through hard times as well. Group members can bond by working together, offering each other insight and support.

For individuals who are struggling with Alzheimer’s disease, family is a primary support system. This disease is not only hard for the individual, but can be devastating for the whole family. Many times patients need to rely on family members to get by on a daily basis, which can cause an enormous amount of stress. Family therapy is used to help all members express their frustrations and concerns about this disease. Family members will also learn what they can do to help their loved one.

In addition to traditional therapeutic modalities, Delta offers experiential treatments. These may include:

  • Recreational therapy
  • Therapeutic activities
  • Nutrition and wellness counseling
  • Spiritual guidance

Continuing Care

Continuing care and levels of treatment for Alzheimer’s disease

When your inpatient care is complete we will do everything we can to ensure there is no lapse in your recovery process. Our staff will work with you to determine the best next step for care. If you have been stabilized and are able to return home, we will make sure that you have connections to outside resources that can assist you with any concerns that may arise. Additionally, we will make sure you understand your medication needs so that you can adhere to your medication regime.

If you are still in need of more structured care, Delta offers two levels of outpatient treatment designed to fit the needs of each individual. Our Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) is a daily treatment option offering 20 hours of weekly therapy. The Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) is less intense and only meets 3 days a week for 4 hours a day.

Some individuals with Alzheimer’s disease may be in a more advanced stage and are no longer able to return home due to the intense care needed. If your loved one can no longer live on their own, we will work to help you find a perfect place for them where they will receive around the clock care.
